The health benefits of dry January

With that new warning about alcohol, this month may be a good time to reflect on your current drinking habits.

Dry January is a movement that began in 2012 aimed at getting people to take a break from drinking and rethink their alcohol consumption, due to its adverse health effects.

The month gives also gives your body time to rest and reset and lower the amount of toxins entering your body.

“What we found is that people that participate in dry January find other things that are beneficial that they wouldn’t have even realized or are beneficial from stopping alcohol such as sleep schedules might get better, sometimes hair and skin might be better,” said Dr. Neeral Shah, a UVA Health liver disease specialist.

Other impacts of cutting out alcohol include higher energy levels and weight loss.

These benefits also depend on the amount of alcohol you go back to after January ends.
