During times of substantial COVID-19 activity VDH strongly advises athletes to wear masks at all times during group training, competition, and on the sidelines. Additionally, if wearing a mask makes participation in sports difficult, it is advisable not to participate in sports at this time. The total number of spectators cannot exceed 30 percent of the occupancy load of the certificate of occupancy for the venue. On Friday, the the Virginia High School League, released revised guidelines for the return of sports, which included Phase 3 guidiance, something that was missing when similar guidelines were released last month. This means athletes can share balls again, as long as equipment is disinfected frequently before, during and after practices. Other equipment, such as wrestling ear guards, football helmets/other pads, lacrosse helmets/pads/gloves/eyewear should only be work by one person. Also, for those celebrating during practice, high-fives, fist bumps and hugs, are no longer banned in Phase 3.

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) has officially released its playbook for the 2020-21 school year. Winter sports, including basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swimming and wrestling will run from December 14 - February 20. Lord Botetourt athletic director Chuck Pound and Glenvar High School athletic director Richard McElwee said thats the right call. Whether its for the first time in high school or the last time in high school, it may not be what they imagined or were hoping for, but its better than nothing, said Pound. Each individual school district can make up its own regulations that might limit where and how far players can travel for games.

Its awesome playing these teams and meeting teams from all around, said Aaron Crummett, whose team traveled from Harrisonburg to play in the Commonwealth Games. Many of the Commonwealth Games athletes are in high school, and the Virginia High School League is on the verge of deciding how their school seasons will play out. Crummett and Jones said their kids are recovering from already losing a high school season because of the pandemic. Jones hopes the VHSL makes a decision that will allow Commonwealth Games athletes to step back on the field.

The decision to push back football was expected by area athletic directors, such as Lord Botetourts Chuck Pound and William Byrds Jason Taylor. I think all of us wish we were playing football in the fall, along with the other fall sports, added Taylor. Model three at least gives all of our teams and all of our students some hope of having a season, Taylor said. However, high school athletics budgets will likely suffer because of the lack of football, according to Pound.

On Friday, the Virginia High School League, the governing body of high school athletics in Virginia, released its 9-page guidelines for the return of sports. While it gives sport-by-sport specific guidelines for what sports will look like in Phase Two, everything for Phase Three remains, โto be determined.โVHSL divides sports and activities into three main categories, lower, moderate and high infection-risk activities. Lower infection risk activities: Cross country, track and field, swimming, golf, tennis, forensics/debate, scholastic bowl and e-sportsModerate infection risk activities: Volleyball, field hockey, gymnastics, soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, theatre and robotics With appropriate cleaning of equipment and use of face coverings, volleyball, baseball, softball and gymnastics could be considered lower infection riskHigh infection risk activities: Football, wrestling, boys and girls lacrosse, competition cheerleading and musicIn addition to activity-specific guidelines, guidelines for facilities cleaning, entrance/exit strategies, pre-workout screenings, face coverings, hygiene, hydration, travel, locker rooms, weight rooms and equipment are given as well. Here are a few key points from the guidelines for sports in Phase Two:Conditioning and individual drills are allowed at football practice; however, contact with other players is not allowed.

VHSL staff will begin meeting with Coach Advisory Committees of fall sports to discuss developing reopening plans. VHSL is drawing input to provide answers to the questions: How and when do VHSL sports and activities return? We will continue to advocate for them and the return of high school athletics and activities, said VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. Billy Haun. As a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), the VHSL works closely with other states in developing guidelines for the reopening of sports, as well as monitoring NCAA reopening guidelines.
