Sickle cell disease is a rare genetic blood disorder that affects every aspect of a person’s life. Predominately impacting people of color, the disease has long been misunderstood by the community and even doctors. It’s also historically come with some unfair stigmas. June 19 is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. It's observed each year with the goal to increase understanding of sickle cell disease, and the challenges facing patients, families and caregivers. Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that impacts every aspect of a person’s life. Throughout history, it's long been misunderstood and medical professionals with Carilion say the disease has even come with some pretty unfair stigmas.

ROANOKE, Va. – A Roanoke family is asking for help to meet the urgent need for more blood donations from Black people. Nicole Ross and Tommy Page's oldest son died from sickle cell anemia. With one son’s memory and two others' ongoing battle, they’re pushing for Black people to donate blood. Donations are now lower than ever because of the coronavirus pandemic, leading the Red Cross to issue an urgent need for Black blood donors. The Red Cross is holding a blood drive in Roanoke specifically targeting to help sickle cell patients on Sept. 29 from 12 to 6 p.m.
