So, the sheriff’s office partnered with churches to raise money to get gifts for around 20 families this year. FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – Two people are dead in Franklin County after authorities said a woman killed a man and then shot herself on Thursday evening. At about 5 p.m., a woman called 911 from Piney Point Road in Union Hall, told authorities that she killed someone and then hung up the phone, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. A few minutes later, a man called 911, also from Piney Point Road, saying his wife shot herself. When deputies arrived at the woman’s home on Piney Point Road, they said they found the 65-year-old with life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not yet identified the man and 10 News is choosing to not identify the woman due to the suspected nature of her death.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va – Despite challenges from the coronavirus pandemic, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is working to help give back to those in need this holiday season. In the past, the Sheriff’s Office has sold Christmas trees to help give back to people in the community. COVID-19 restrictions have caused several fundraising events to be canceled, but deputies and other workers at the Sheriff’s Office are still working with several churches to help donate toys and other gifts ahead of the holidays. “We’re hoping to reach about 20 families so about half of what we normally do but we can’t do it without the churches in the area and the support of the community so we’re excited to provide what we can provide,” Franklin County Sheriff Sergeant Megan Patterson said. The Sheriff’s Office says it may not be able to help every church in the area but hope to make as much of a difference as possible this year.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – Burglars broke into two local convenience stores early Tuesday, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the pair got away with cash and cigarettes. The pair burglarized the Eagle Mart located at 7645 Hardy Road in Hardy and the Redwood Express Mart located at 3362 Old Franklin Turnpike in Glade Hill. The Sheriff’s Office described the burglars as two middle-aged men wearing masks and head coverings. FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is reporting new coronavirus cases. On Monday, Sheriff Bill Overton announced that late last month, during a daily screening process, an inmate was quarantined and tested for COVID-19 after presenting sinus/allergy-like symptoms. That person did indeed test positive, which prompted more testing throughout the jail. Since then, other offenders, as well as Sheriff’s Office staff have tested positive. Some inmates have been taken to the Western Virginia Regional Jail as it has a greater capacity to house offenders, while providing any necessary medical care and isolation from their healthy population, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is asking for your help finding a missing 38-year-old man. Ricky Stout’s family said he was last seen leaving his home in Rocky Mount on Monday night, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Officials say inmate Curtis Sparks, 35, was found in the area of Power Dam Road in Franklin County around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Deputies say a group of trustee inmates were attending a program on the Sheriff’s Office Complex. According to the sheriff’s office Sparks is serving a sentence as a non-violent offender and is known to frequent Henry and Botetourt County. FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – A local K9 is ready to safely take on the job thanks to a donation of a bullet and stab-proof protective vest. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a donation for their K9, Sasha, from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., sponsored by Don and Misty Fike of Galesburg, IL. The nonprofit’s mission is to “provide bullet and stab-protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the country.”Two-year-old Sasha’s vest is in full service as she works alongside her handler, deputy Alejandro with the Sheriff’s Office.

FRANKLIN CO., Va. – On Saturday the Franklin County Communications Center received a 911 call at around 9:00 pm alerting of a subject in the river in distress. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Franklin County Public Safety responded to the incident in the 5000 block of Brooks Mill Road. Rescue searches were conducted, but officials were unable to locate the subject and rescheduled the search to Sunday morning. Franklin County deputies and Public Safety responded. According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, 28-year-old Clinton Wayne Wiseman, of Wirtz, is being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail. 1:00 A.M Friday update:After a nearly 10-hour standoff, authorities took 28-year-old Clinton Wayne Wiseman, of Wirtz, into custody, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Multiple agencies assisted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, including the Virginia State Police. Deputies are trying to talk to a man in his late 20s who has barricaded himself inside an underground storm shelter, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office is asking drivers to detour and avoid the area.

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – A spokesperson for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were alerted to a homicide by a 911 call around 3:30 Sunday afternoon. Deputies along with Virginia State Police and Franklin County Public Safety responded to the 10,000 block of Virgil Goode Highway in Rocky Mount. Authorities said the victim, 59-year-old Denny Smith of Rocky Mount, was found dead in his home from a gunshot wound. The suspect, 55-year-old Gregory Kendrick of Rocky Mount, was arrested on scene. Kendrick has been charged with second degree murder and is being held at the Franklin County Jail with no bond.

GLADE HILL, Va. – Franklin County deputies are investigating after a 35-year-old man was killed during a shooting in Glade Hill Saturday evening. According to a Franklin County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, deputies responded to a shots fired call on Greenway Rd. Deputies said Jon-Matthew Sheffield was shot and killed during an altercation. The sheriff’s office said this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community. The investigation is ongoing.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an attempted arm robbery from Saturday night. They say a man entered Hardy’s Mart on Booker T Washington Highway around 8 p.m. demanding money and had a firearm. The suspect then fled the scene; there was no vehicle present. Deputies are searching for the suspect. If you know anything call the sheriff’s office.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – What started as a traffic stop on a 25-year-old Wirtz man ended in him facing a drug charge. On Jan. 18, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle missing a front license plate and the registration displayed did not belong to the vehicle, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. During the traffic stop, the deputy searched the vehicle and found about 100 small baggies containing a power residue that tested positive for heroin. Also in the vehicle were syringes and a set of digital scales. The driver, Troy Wickline, was charged with possession with the intent to distribute a Schedule I or II controlled substance.

10 News reached out to Michael Brown directly and received a reply as he awaits trial at the Western Virginia Regional Jail. On Nov. 14, authorities found Michael Brown’s RV parked next to Saint Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church. According to his lawyer, Deborah Caldwell-Bono, Brown was in the RV the entire time as law enforcement agencies searched the vehicle. Once the RV arrived at the tow company’s lot, Brown exited the RV and jumped a fence to leave the lot, according to Caldwell-Bono. Before that, Michael Brown was reported missing from his post at Camp Lejeune in mid-October.

UNION HALL, Va. – U.S. Marshals and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office were near Union Hall Saturday afternoon. We reached out to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office who said there was no sighting of Brown in the county. A sheriff’s office spokesman, however, would not answer 10 News’ question if the search was in connection to Brown. Marshals office for more information.

FRANKLIN COUNTY – A Franklin County woman was arrested after posing as an escort, police said. Tabitha D. Amos, 29, was wanted for outstanding warrants for manufacturing, possessing drugs, felony child endangerment and revocation of suspended sentence. According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began on Jan. 3 when police learned Amos had been posing as an escort on social media. She was arrested on the outstanding charges and is currently being held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail without bond. The case is currently under investigation and additional charges may be pending.

ROCKY MOUNT –Two people in Franklin County were arrested in connection to a meth lab at a motel in Rocky Mount. The meth lab was found at the Hometown Inn on 18059 Virgil Good Highway, deputies said. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office came to the motel to investigate the odor of marijuana coming from one of the rooms. The room was later secured and a meth lab was found inside. Henry Eric Routon and Brittany Danielle Nichols were both arrested and face charges related to the meth lab.
