RICHMOND, Va. – What a season for the boys and girls Maroons programs! At the VHSL Class 1 state championship in Richmond, the George Wythe girls defeated Buffalo Gap 50-44. That proved to be the Maroons first state championship victory since 1989.
“You know, this means the world,” said George Wythe head coach Doug Campbell. “This is started off, you know, when I first got here years ago and to get to this ... sorry, get a little emotional. But it means everything and you know somebody asked me and I was always joking and said when did you feel like he was going to do this? I said when the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl. I knew we were going to win this right now.”
“We’ve worked for this for a whole year like we’re ready and that’s what our mentality was like,” said Maroons junior guard Makaylan Luttrell. “If we’re going to be here like why can we not win it? What’s stopping us?”

Immediately following that game, the George Wythe boys battled Franklin. Reed Kirtner scored 12 first quarter points while David Good had 11 in the opening quarter. The Maroons built a comfortable 52-20 halftime lead before surging ahead to the 77-38 victory.
“We shoot the ball really well, but we had concerns of how athletic and how fast they were,” said Maroons senior guard Shane Huff. “They’re very active in the 2-3 zone and we just came out, just attacked the spots that we thought we needed attack and we kicked it and got open shots and we were hitting today.”
