VMI releases 2025 football schedule, promote Hampton as OC

Keydets to play Ferrum for the first time since 1961

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 2025 schedule has been released for the VMI Keydets, featuring a 12-game slate with five home games, seven road games.

VMI will start the season on the road at Navy.

“Really excited about the opportunity to open the season at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis,” Rocco said.

The home opener against Ferrum is followed by dates with Bucknell and Richmond before the bye week sets up SoCon play. It will be the second trip to Lewisburg in three years for the Keydets, and the first match-up with Richmond since 2015.

“With Ferrum being on the schedule, it’s a slightly different look but I think it’s good for us to have at home as we go to Bucknell and to Richmond to close out the non-conference schedule,” said Rocco.

The Keydets vs. Panthers match-up will mark the first between the two programs since 1961.

VMI Football Head Coach Danny Rocco announced the promotion of AJ Hampton to Offensive Coordinator for the upcoming 2025 season on Thursday.

“After the season, I had a chance to reevaluate our staff and take a deep dive into everything we are doing,” Rocco said. “We’re in the process of making some sound decisions moving forward and the first of those is to promote Coach AJ Hampton to offensive coordinator.”

The Lord Botetourt High School grad joined Rocco in 2023 as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator before adding pass game coordinator later in the season.

“AJ has done a really good job here with all the different tasks he’s had,” said Rocco. “He takes great initiative, he takes great pride in his work and I think he’s a very talented young football coach.”

As the recruiting coordinator, Hampton played a crucial role in bringing in the past two classes (2024, 2025) including 11 on the December 4th signing day. Although he will be elevated to play caller, Hampton will continue to work with the wide receivers in the upcoming year.

Coach Rocco said in a statement that he will have more coaching assignment changes and responsibilities to announce in the spring semester.
