Flycodes Invitational Basketball Showcase returns this weekend

FIBS 24 to feature 5 games including a boys middle school matchup to start the day

ROANOKE, Va. – With the high school hoops season in full swing, it’s that time of the year for teams to start playing tournaments and showcase events. A big one that always highlights local talent is the Flycodes Invitational Showcase.

This will be the fifth overall year for the event, the third consecutive that Flycodes will put on.

“Our goal is just to make sure we bring great basketball to the area, competitive basketball, and I think a lot of things that’s been missed in the game is fun--having fun playing basketball,” said Flycodes founder and event organizer Champ Hubbard.

“It’s going to be an exhibit of what these teams bring to the table.”

Saturday’s lineup of five games carry their own individual and intriguing story lines. The day will start at noon featuring a boys middle school showdown with Lucy Addison vs. Breckinridge.

Following that game, the lone girls game of the day will be played between Christiansburg and E.C. Glass.

Then three boys matchups to close the night: Radford vs. Roanoke Catholic, Spotswood vs. E.C. Glass and G.W. Danville vs. William Fleming.

Regarding the nightcap between the Eagles and Colonels, Hubbard said that’s an effort to possibly reignite an old rivalry on the hardwoods.

“I want to make sure that everybody understands, we’re trying to bring the rivalry back: G.W. Danville against William Fleming. Especially this year because we have two new coaches: the former coach from Tunstall has taken over as a head coach at the school that he went to, G.W. And then we got Kirchman, who’s taken over for Mickey Hardy, who’s the head coach at William Fleming. So it should be a really, really good game and it might ignite the rivalry all over again all over again.”

Tickets can be purchased at the gate upon arrival and are just $10 for a full day of games to be held at William Fleming High School.
