52-year-old man arrested after high-speed chase in Henry County Thursday

HENRY COUNTY, Va.Update:

A 52-year-old Martinsville man wanted out of Henry County and Martinsville was arrested after a vehicle pursuit in Henry County on Thursday.

At approximately 10:05 a.m., deputies with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office were in the area of Stultz Rd in Collinsville. Deputies observed a white Chevrolet SUV traveling at a very high rate of speed and traveling in the wrong lane into oncoming traffic on Stultz Rd.

According to officials, the SUV matched the description of a vehicle that Gregory Yuron Campell was known to be traveling in. Campbell was wanted out of Martinsville City for three counts of probation violation, with underlying charges of delinquency of a minor, child abuse and felony elude police.

He was also wanted out of Henry County for three counts of misdemeanor credit fraud, two counts of felony credit card larceny and one count of misdemeanor petit larceny.

Deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle. but Campbell failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued. Campbell continued traveling at a high rate of speed, fleeing from Henry County Deputies, VSP and Martinsville Police through multiple communities in Henry County.

HCSO says that the pursuit continued onto Sunset Drive in the Bassett community, where deputies located a female who appeared injured on the side of the road. Deputies immediately stopped to check on the woman’s well-being, where she told deputies that Campbell had taken control of her vehicle when she offered him a ride, then would not let her out of the vehicle. When the vehicle slowed down on Sunset Road, she jumped out.

Deputies lost sight of the vehicle but found it again at a residence in the 1100 block of Sunset Drive, where it had hit a retaining wall on the property.

Campbell then fled on foot and a short time later, he was apprehended by authorities in a wooded area off of Sunset Drive.

Campbell was taken into custody without additional incident. The woman was treated on the scene for minor injuries by Henry County Public Safety.

  • Virginia Code Section§18.2-47 Abduction by Force ( Felony)
  • Virginia Code section§46.2.817 Elude Police ( Felony)
  • Virginia Code section §46.2. 894 Hit and Run Attended: Failure to Stop ( Felony

Campbell was also served with the outstanding warrants he had out of Martinsville City and Henry County. He is currently being held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center with no bond.

A suspect was arrested in Henry County on Thursday following a high-speed chase, Henry County Sheriff’s Office said.

HCSO said they received reports of someone speeding on the wrong side of the road in Bassett. After deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped off, initiating a high-speed chase.

Authorities said the driver soon lost control of the vehicle and crashed near a home on Sunset Drive. The suspect attempted to flee the scene, but was quickly arrested.

After the arrest, HCSO said they found a woman on the side of the road who claims the driver stole her vehicle and abducted her.
