Heavy snow impacts Lexington, leading to dangerous conditions

LEXINGTON, Va. – Close to a foot of snow fell in Lexington and surrounding areas as of Tuesday afternoon, followed by ice leading to dangerous road conditions.

VDOT’s Staunton District reported snow or ice cover on major roadways like Interstates 81 and 64 and many primary and secondary roads in the Alleghany Highlands and Shenandoah Valley.

The heavy winter precipitation led to the closures of schools, businesses, and institutions like Washington and Lee University, which closed at 10 a.m. Some students and employees tried to make the best of the situation.

“At first, I stayed to do a little work. Then, I decided to go home, and tried to get out of out of her and I couldn’t get out so now I’m walking home,” said Shamar Brandy, who works at the university.

Some international students at the university were seeing snow for the first time.

“Looking at the snow is great, very nice, seeing the town covered in white. It’s a little cold, though,” said Antonio Bueno, a student.

He and others took part in a snow football game, playing American football for the first time.
