BEDFORD, Va – The Bedford County school board met earlier this evening to finalize its budget request, amidst concerns about cuts to important programs.
The proposed budget totals more than $124,000,000. Four million of those dollars are increases from last year.
“So once we find out, you know, do we have money that will, you know, take care of the $4.2 million that we’re requesting? Do we need to cut something?” said Marcus Hill, the chairman of the Bedford County school board. “And again, we’re trying to be proactive and saying what are things that we could possibly look at?”
The proposed budget gained traction on social media as some of the potential budget cuts included closing the Susie G. Gibson Science & Technology Center.
School officials told 10 News that there are no current plans to close the center.
The district won’t know if they need to make cuts until the state and county finalize budgets in March and April.
