Garage fire in Salem causes $30,000 in damages Thursday

SALEM, Va. – A garage fire in Salem caused $30,000 in damages Thursday, according to the Salem Fire & EMS Dept.

Salem Fire & EMS responded to a residential structure fire at 10:35 a.m. in the 1700 block of Morwanda St. Initially firefighters found heavy smoke coming from a single-story detached garage that was situated behind the residence.

First responders say they were able to put out the fire within 20 minutes and were able to limit the fire to the exterior rear of the garage and part of the attic.

The garage sustained about $30,000 in damages and four chickens that were in a pen near the fire’s origin were killed. The fire has been determined to be accidental and was caused by a heating lamp that was positioned too close to combustibles.
