The Virginia Department of Health recommends that you watch your child for pertussis symptoms. Pertussis usually starts like a cold, with a runny nose, sneezing, and maybe a mild fever, followed by a cough that can last for several weeks. There can be uncontrolled coughing spells with difficulty breathing or vomiting. If you suspect your child may be ill, please follow up with their healthcare provider.
Children with pertussis and other infectious respiratory illnesses need to stay home from school and other activities, such as childcare, sports, or play groups. Children who are awaiting test results cannot return to school until the results of the test are received.
