ROANOKE, Va. – Tax season officially kicks off today.
“I already have an appointment to have my taxes done,” said Amy Papageorge.
10 News spoke with Kembel Tax Service owner David Kembel about what exemptions people can expect. He said there are some old ones, but nothing new.
You can still qualify for a tax credit if you made any energy-saving home improvements, like installing a new heat pump, windows, or even skylights. You could qualify for a tax credit of up to $3,200 if you made any energy-saving home improvements. IRS Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.
There are also tax credits for people who buy new electric cars purchased in 2023 or after. In fact, you could qualify for a tax credit of up to $7,500. IRS Credits for New Clean Vehicles.
Meanwhile, if you had solar panels installed in your home, you could get about 30% of what they cost.
Kembel said there has been some talk about getting rid of taxes on tips or increasing the child tax credit, but that hasn’t happened yet. He advised making sure you get all your documents together and not waiting until the last minute to file. “Do your taxes now,” he said.
“If you think you’re gonna owe right much, if you can just find out now and that way you can plan on it and maybe you can work some overtime, maybe you’ll take a second job, maybe you’ll not spend some money because you know you’re gonna have a big tax bill,” said Kembel.
Many people said they do their taxes right away. “As soon as I get all the paperwork, I’ll file them,” said Margaret Kirkby. “I do them as soon as I can,” said Brandon England.
However, some people say they wait to do their taxes. “My wife is a CPA, so it will be kind of on her schedule,” said Michael McManus.
