Roanoke City Council starts process to fill empty seat

ROANOKE, Va. – The first task of the year for Roanoke’s new city council is to fill a vacant seat left open by newly elected mayor Joe Cobb.

The position has to be filled by Feb. 14. 10 News asked Cobb what the council is looking for in a candidate.

“We’re looking for someone who wants to be very engaged in the life of the city,” said Roanoke Mayor Joe Cobb. “Obviously if people have experience, whether they’ve served on city council before or on other boards or agencies in the community, they’re very dedicated to seeing the community grow and move forward.”

Instead of holding a special election, the city is opening applications to residents.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 17 at 5 p.m . Council will review the applications and make a decision in the coming weeks.
