Bedford Police Department charges woman in daycare child abuse case

Bedford, Va. – The Bedford Police Department has reported that they have charged a local woman with child abuse following an investigation into incidents at a daycare facility. According to a media release from the Bedford Police Department, a complaint was filed on Nov. 26, 2024, regarding a 5-month-old child who sustained a broken arm at the daycare. The police, in collaboration with the Bedford County Department of Social Services and the Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Child Care Health and Safety, launched an investigation.

The daycare facility cooperated fully, providing over 130 hours of video footage and other resources to assist the investigation, according to authorities. Detectives conducted multiple interviews and, during the course of the investigation, identified more than one victim.

On Jan. 7, 2025, three felony warrants were issued for 36-year-old Kellie Nicole DaFlucas of Bedford County, police said. The charges relate to incidents occurring between Nov. 12 and Nov. 26, 2024. DaFlucas is accused of committing acts or omissions in the care of children under 18 that were “so gross and wanton as to show a reckless disregard for human life,” as defined by Code of Virginia 18.2-371.1.

No other daycare employees were found to have acted negligently or inappropriately, according to the Bedford Police Department. The department stated that no further information is available at this time.
