As winter sets in, it’s important to ensure your pets are safe and comfortable. Here are some tips to help protect your furry friends during the colder months.

Keep your pets inside

First and foremost, keep your pets inside. If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for them. Pets are susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite, so it’s best to limit their time outdoors.

Protect their paws

Protecting their paws is crucial. Snow, ice, and salt can cause irritation and injury. Consider using pet-safe booties or applying a protective balm to their paws before heading outside. After walks, check their paws for any signs of frostbite and remove any ice, salt, or chemicals.

Clean up antifreeze

Antifreeze is another winter hazard. Its sweet taste can attract pets, but it’s highly toxic. Ensure that any spills are cleaned up immediately and store antifreeze securely out of reach.

Provide fresh water

Providing fresh water is essential. Pets can become dehydrated in winter, just like in summer. Ensure their water bowl is not frozen and is replenished regularly.

Avoid giving your pet baths

During cold spells, avoid giving your pet baths. Wet fur can make them more susceptible to the cold. If a bath is necessary, ensure they are thoroughly dried before going outside.

Feed your pet a little extra

Lastly, consider feeding your pet a little extra during winter. The extra calories can help them maintain their energy levels and keep warm.
