CARROLL CO., Va. – A suspect who was wanted for first-degree murder in North Carolina was found dead in Carroll County Monday.
According to the Surry County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina, the office is currently investigating a double shooting that took place at 6:26 a.m. in Mount Airy North Carolina Monday.

Upon arrival at the scene in the 100 block of King Park Circle, deputies discovered a woman deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. Authorities also found a second woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck, in critical condition.
The critically injured victim was transported to Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy and was later transported to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where she is in critical condition.
10 News has learned the Surry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, in collaboration with the North Carolina State Buerau of Investigations responded to the scene and began a thorough investigation.
The case is being treated as a homicide, according to investigators.
Detectives issued a warrant for first-degree murder for 23-year-old Evan Burcham.
Deputies with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office were able to locate Burcham, getting off of I-77 at Exit 1 in Virginia.
According to the office, Burcham traveled to an address of Pauls Creek Road, Cana, Virginia.
Authorities say as Burcham pulled into the property deputies witnessed Burcham discharge a gun inflicting a self-inflicted wound.
Burcham was pronounced dead at the scene by Carroll County Fire and Rescue. The Galax Police Dept. and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office assisted Surry County with the incident, 10 News has learned.
