RICHMOND, Va. – Santa’s sleigh is cleared to enter Virginia on Dec. 24, thanks to an entry permit for his reindeer. Dr. Charlie Broaddus, state veterinarian with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) have approved Santa’s reindeer to deliver presents across the state.

The state veterinarian regulates animal movement into Virginia, while the DWR manages wildlife resources. Typically, importing deer is prohibited, and a DWR permit is required to possess deer within Virginia. Ruminants must have identification, such as an ear tag, to aid in tracing during disease outbreaks, according to the Department.

“Santa’s visit to Virginia may be brief each year, but it’s still vitally important to our state agricultural industry that his reindeer are healthy,” Dr. Broaddus said. “It’s a privilege to issue permits for Santa, and I hope he enjoys some fresh local Virginia milk and that the reindeer get plenty of Virginia-grown carrots during their visit.”

Dr. John Tracey, DWR state wildlife veterinarian, added, “Santa has always been an excellent partner, and his attention to the health of his reindeer team cannot be overstated. We look forward to his yearly visit.”
