The community is shaken after the passing of Nikki Giovanni, an acclaimed poet, Black Arts Movement icon and esteemed Virginia Tech professor. She was 81 years old and is said to have died peacefully with her lifelong partner, Virginia [Ginney] Fowler, at her side, according to a statement from friend and author Renée Watson.

Her influence on those around her was insurmountable. Serving as a University Distinguished Professor in the English Department at Virginia Tech, not only did she touch the hearts of those in the Commonwealth and beyond but she also left her mark on all of Hokie Nation.
