Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke experienced a temporary lockdown Tuesday morning due to police activity on Avenel Avenue. The incident was related to reports of shots fired in the area but it was not directly connected to the school itself, school officials said.
Roanoke City Public Schools communicated the situation to families, urging parents to remain where they were and refrain from coming to the school. The message emphasized that the lockdown was a precautionary measure due to nearby police activity.
The Roanoke Police Department told 10 News that they had been responding to a well-being check at a residence at about 8:21 a.m. When they tried to make contact with the individual, a shot was fired inside the home.
More resources arrived at the scene and the man ultimately surrendered. Authorities said he is currently in custody and no one was hurt.
Later in the morning, school officials sent an update to inform families that the lockdown had been lifted. The school transitioned to a shelter-in-place status, allowing buses to arrive on campus while law enforcement continued to monitor the situation. The residence on Avenel Avenue, where the incident occurred, was secured by law enforcement.
Classes at Patrick Henry High School resumed as normal, although a police presence remained in the area to ensure safety until the incident was fully resolved.
