Geologists in Virginia are studying landslides caused by Hurricane Helene to better prepare for next time and aid in recovery efforts.
After Helene, 25 landslides were detected across Virginia and more than 1,000 across Appalachia.
“Here in Virginia, you’re right, we did not have as many landslides, thank goodness, from hurricane Helene,” said Anne Witt, geohazards geologist at the Virginia Department of Energy. “However, if it had just gone a little bit differently, that rainfall certainly could’ve generated hundreds or thousands of landslides. It’s not like this hasn’t happened before.”
The landslides were confirmed by satellite imagery. Geologists will use the information to predict areas where landslides are likely to happen and help prepare emergency officials in advance of the next storm.
