Showers and a few rumbles of thunder are back in the region this morning! As of 6:30 AM, we are starting to see parts of the NRV and Lynchburg Zones drying out, but the widespread showers now affecting Roanoke, Highlands, and Southside Zones, along with eastern parts of the NRV.
Your out-the-door, forecast this morning is very similar to Thursday’s! We have the chance for a few stray showers but will stay mostly dry for the remainder of the day. It’ll be a great afternoon to get outside!

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase across Southwest and Central Virginia beginning Friday, with warmer-than-average temperatures and a marginal risk for severe weather through the weekend, according to 10 News's meteorologist Jeff Haniewich.
Residents pounded by unusually vicious weather across parts of the U.S. are surveying damage from violent tornadoes, high winds and blinding dust storms. A massive storm has decimated homes and other structures and left at least 35 people dead since Friday. National Weather Service meteorologist Cody Snell says tornado watches remained in effect Sunday morning for portions of the Carolinas, east Georgia and northern Florida. He says the main threat would be damaging winds, but there is the possibility of more tornadoes.
A Weather Authority Alert Day has been issued for December 29 due to the possibility of heavy thunderstorms and up to 60 MPH winds, which the NOAA classifies as damaging winds. It’s important to keep yourself safe, and make sure your outdoor belongings aren’t at risk of flying away!
Severe thunderstorms are not as common as they might be in other parts of the country, but they do still happen locally in the spring and summer months.
Smoky skies return tonight. They will last through the middle of the week once rain chances return. Our air quality will gradually decline overnight tonight, and then will improve little by little by Wednesday.

ROANOKE, Va. – River levels continue to come down across southwest and central Virginia, with Southside continuing to be the place to watch for flooding. The Roanoke River at Altavista, Brookneal and Randolph is at minor flood stage this morning, but the levels are falling at all gauges.
