Dozens of cadets constructed the beds on Saturday along with Sleep in Heavenly Peace volunteers. Chapter president Paul Mele said these new beds are enough for everyone on its waiting list. “As future military leaders, it’s important for cadets to give back to their communities and take part in service.”Mele has more builds planned for the spring and summer, but he said this build is especially significant as a Virginia Tech alum. “We’re completely out of beds,” Mele said. He said 29 children in the New River Valley are currently on the waiting list for a bed. Mele said the wait between builds has left him sleepless, and he hopes to get the next round of beds out to the community soon. “When we leave and the kids are bouncing on the bed with joy, you feel so good inside that you want to start making more beds,” Mele said. BEDFORD, Va – One Bedford church is using a new way to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic. Main Street United Methodist installed a Blessing Box in one of their parking lots. Dawn Compton, the church’s pastor, says it’s one way to continue their ministry while practicing distance. That kept them safe, keeps us safe, and it offers maybe some things that they can use,” Compton said. The Blessing Box is open 24/7 for anyone to take what they need or to drop off donations.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The pandemic forced Lynchburg’s annual Turkey Trot to go virtual, but that didn’t stop runners from keeping a Thanksgiving tradition alive. “You run, you have fun with your family, and then you have a big feast,” said 10-year-old Asher Willis. “We’re able to support each other and cheer for each other and just have a fun thanksgiving tradition, even though it’s a much different year this year,” said Keith. Their goal was not the finish line, but to help HumanKind, an organization serving families through dozens of programs. Karol expects the organization to raise half that, as their list of families in need is at 300 and counting.

The previous record for the Teddy Bear Toss was set in 2015 by fans of the Calgary Hitmen with 28,815 stuffed animals. The Hershey Bears collected 25,017 stuffed animals at their 2017 Teddy Bear Toss, but absolutely crushed their record with 34,798 stuffed animals in 2018.
