SALEM, Va. – The community responds in a big way to help end food security!
10 News partnered with Feeding Southwest Virginia and the Salem Civic Center to organize a drive-through drop-off on Friday, Nov. 14.
At the last count, volunteers helped collect over 10,000 lbs of food, and multiple checks and cash donations.
“So the timing is great the Chamber of Commerce and us as a part of the government governors Virginia cares initiative bridge in the gap all across the Commonwealth with food drives and so today we put out the call this community is generous compassionate. They showed up like you said an hour and a half early ready to donate our volunteers hardly will leave their shift. They’re having so much fun getting the food and getting to our neighbors so.”

“As we approach the holiday season, we already tend to see that increased need across our service region. Our most recent data suggest that over 171,000 Neighbors in Southwest Virginia face hunger so regardless, there’s a lot of neat out there and it’s always important that our shelves are stock so we’re equipped to meet that need.”

The donated items will be distributed to those in need within five to seven days.
