Carbon monoxide poisoning is incredibly dangerous. Not only can it make you very sick, but it could even lead to death.
Carbon monoxide can’t be sensed by people, as it is colorless and odorless. This is why it’s incredibly important to make sure your home has a functioning carbon monoxide detector. Many use batteries, while some simply plug into your wall. Having a working detector can save your life if there is a gas leak in your home.

You can be exposed to CO in various ways, but it most often involves some sort of leak with your home gas stove, portable generators, or a charcoal grill, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The following are common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the CDC:
- headache
- dizziness
- weakness
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- chest pain
- confusion
If you’re exposed to CO for too long, it could be fatal. If you believe you’ve been exposed to carbon monoxide, the Environmental Protection Agency suggests you turn off all appliances, open your windows and doors, and get fresh air immediately. Get to an emergency room as soon as possible, then, have a qualified technician inspect your appliances to find the possible leak.
