Weather Authority Alert Day for Sunday
ROANOKE, Va. – A Weather Authority Alert Day has been issued for Sunday morning and afternoon (roughly from sunrise to sunset). Snow is expected to push into the area, potentially mixing with some sleet, freezing rain, and plain rain...especially the further southeast you go. The general outlook indicates more snow accumulation to the north and west, with less to the south and east.
Recap of Friday and Saturday's Weather
Friday offered a pleasant break with sunny skies and mild temperatures. However, a weather system is setting its course this Saturday, moving in from the south and west. This system might bring a brief wintry mix consisting of snow, sleet, and freezing rain into some areas, before transitioning into rain. The good news is that conditions are expected to clear up at some point Saturday afternoon, with a dry evening and night ahead.
Sunday's Coastal System and Possible Impact
Sunday could be snowy for some, thanks to a coastal system introducing moisture to the area. Although the forecast suggests snowfall totals may not be drastic, this could still create an impact on travel, especially in the mountains. Farther south and east, it may just be rain or a mix. Regardless, the precipitation on Sunday looks to be pretty light for the most part. After the storm system on Sunday, the area will experience the coldest air of the season so far...maybe the coldest air in more than three years! An extreme cold watch has already been issued by the National Weather Service for areas like the Highlands and the New River Valley, indicating early next week’s highs may only reach the 10 to 20-degree range, with lows in the single digits. There is a very high likelihood of another Weather Authority Alert Day for Monday and Tuesday because of this frigid air mass. But at least we will be dry on Monday. There is a chance for a few more snow showers on Tuesday.
Preparation Tips and Looking Ahead
It’s wise to prepare for the potential snow on Sunday by reviewing travel plans and ensuring readiness for colder temperatures. The Weather Authority advises staying updated with forecast changes as the weekend progresses, as this forecast is not carved in stone.
