ROANOKE, Va. – Widespread rain showers are continuing this morning with heavier pockets moving through at times. After the rain some big changes quickly arrive.
Here is a look at futurecast at lunch hour. Rain continues moving through with the heaviest stuff moving out east. A little bit of sleet and snow showers will push in behind as temperatures look to cool quickly. Accumulation of snow is not expected because of the wet grounds (temperatures at the surface are too warm). However, snow is likely across the NRV and Highlands with the possibility of seeing some flurries in the Roanoke Valley.
The mountains and west facing slopes will see a dusting a light accumulation.
By 3:00pm most of the rain is out of here. A few lingering showers will likely remain in the area for a short while, but skies clear up in the middle of the afternoon.
How much rain could we see for the rest of the day? Most see between half an inch and two inches before the event is over with isolated areas seeing nearly double that!
Wind advisories are in effect because gusty winds return after the rain moves out.
Gusts reach as high as 40mph in the Roanoke Valley this afternoon and into the night. Areas along the Blue Ridge, NRV, and Highlands could see winds closer to 50mph.
The gusty winds paired with cold air rushing into the region will create a frigid wind chill tonight.
Tomorrow morning will feature single digit wind chill values for some with most spots feeling like the teens and 20s.
