UPDATE:
The Highlanders secured the Three Rivers District title with a 24-6 victory over Floyd County in a key regional rivalry game.
The matchup featured two district and regional rivals, with both teams aiming to enter the playoffs on a high note. Floyd County, coming off two losses in their last three games, hosted the game.
Buffaloes started strong with Sam Phillips making impressive plays, including a touchdown reaching across the pylon. Floyd led early 6-0 before Glenvar answered back with Brody Joyock connecting a perfect pass to Forester, tying the game at 7-6.
Glenvar took control in the first half, leading 14-6 at halftime. Key player Doyot was sidelined in the second half due to injury, but the Highlanders continued to dominate.
Floyd County’s defense, led by Andrew Hunter with a sack, tried to keep Glenvar at bay. However, the Highlanders scored 10 more points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Floyd County coach praised his team’s resilience despite the loss and injury setbacks. Glenvar coach expressed pride in the team’s character and ability to respond under pressure.
With the win, Glenvarofficially clinched the Three Rivers District title and secured the number one seed in Region 2C.
With only two losses this season, the Floyd County Buffaloes are positioned to for a playoff berth and potentially host a game. Their upcoming matchup against one of the best teams in Class 2, the Glenvar Highlanders, presents a welcomed challenge.
The rivalry with Floyd County adds intensity to the season, with the two teams separated only by Poor Mountain. The last time Floyd County appeared on the Game of the Week, they suffered a shootout loss against Route 221 rival Carroll County.
Last week, Floyd County fell to Radford on the road, providing plenty of learning moments for the second half of their season. Head coach Tim Cromer believes his team can bounce back from setbacks.
“It’s all fun and games, so it’s not fun and games and you know we can talk about being resilient. We can talk about playing together. We can talk about loving each other when things are going well, but when you lose a football game, you know how are we going to react? And if you lose a game, it doesn’t mean things aren’t going well,” Cromer said.
